Education & Training
Primary and Secondary Education
The Greater Southern Tier area is highly regarded due to its vast educational opportunities from pre-school through post-doctoral experiences. You can be confident in the education your children will receive from the numerous school districts throughout the area. Southern Tier school districts offer children the opportunity to learn in supportive and challenging environments which prepare them well for higher education or direct entry into the workforce. Several districts, including the Corning-Painted Post Area School district, offer the chance for high school students to challenge themselves with collegiate level courses that can transfer to two- or four- year colleges after graduation.
Higher Education Opportunities
This area of New York State offers many options for those interested in beginning or continuing higher education. In addition to the opportunities offered by numerous community colleges and State University of New York Colleges (SUNY Schools), the area has an abundant amount of well respected four-year and graduate universities . The majority of these institutions are within a two hour driving range of the Southern Tier, offering convenience for students and parents, as well as thorough educational opportunities for those wishing to enhance present skills. Some of the higher education facilities in close proximity to the Southern Tier are Elmira College, Cornell University, Ithaca College, Mansfield University, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Alfred and Alfred University. In addition, Rochester and Syracuse are both within a two hour driving distance, and one can reach Buffalo in less than three hours, vastly increasing the educational opportunities for interested individuals.
Alfred University
Alfred University is located about an hour and a half from the central Southern Tier. "Alfred University is a private, nonsectarian university, and one of the first coeducational institutions in the US. Ours is a friendly, vibrant campus of about 2400 students located in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in Western New York. Classes are small, teaching is a faculty priority, and undergraduate research is the hallmark of an Alfred University degree. Alfred University moved into the top 10 among master's level institutions in the North in this year's U.S. News and World Report college guide, "America's Best Colleges." The annual publication again ranks Alfred University as the "#1 Best Value" in the North. AU's internationally-known ceramics M.F.A. program was ranked No. 1 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in its last three reviews."
Alfred State
Alfred State is located about an hour and a half from the central Southern Tier. "Alfred State College, a member of the technology college sector within the State University of New York (SUNY) system, offers outstanding educational opportunities for students in its nearly 60 associate degree programs, 11 baccalaureate degree programs, and several certificate programs. Numerous vocational-technical offerings stressing hands-on learning are available at the School of Applied Technology Campus located in nearby Wellsville, NY. The College is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and several programs are also accredited or approved by program-specific professional organizations. In recent years, the College has expanded its computing and networking choices to include a wireless option. While stressing technical education, the College continues to pride itself on maintaining close personal ties among students and faculty."
Cornell University
Cornell University is located about 45 minutes from the central Southern Tier. "Cornellians are among the world's leaders in information technology. Our campus is home to many of the Internet pioneers of the 1960s and 70s who blazed information trails via telephone lines from one research institution to another. Today, Cornell's Center for Theory and Simulation in Science and Engineering boasts one of the largest and fastest supercomputers in academia. Each hour, thousands of Cornellians communicate with one another via electronic mail here on our Ithaca campus and all around the world. Students can check their grades, review materials in the Cornell University Library, and pre-register for classes all from their residence hall rooms."
Corning Community College
Corning Community College is located on one of the hills overlooking Corning. "Corning Community College stands as a testimony to our region's ability to take a great vision through to completion. Founded in 1956 by the Corning-Painted Post School District, CCC began modestly in a scattering of old buildings in the city of Corning. Today, we encompass a 550-acre main campus on Spencer Hill with a complex of eight buildings plus an observatory and planetarium. We've also expanded our vision to provide services at a variety of off-campus sites throughout Steuben, Chemung and Schuyler counties. We are truly a community college, and proud of it."
Elmira College
Elmira College is located just outside of downtown Elmira. "Elmira is a place where you will learn to think in the classroom - and learn to take action through internships, community service, and a cool experiential arts program called Encore. And then there's Term III, our exciting Spring curriculum, with its unique classes, study abroad programs and out-of-the box experiences. Term III is all about exploring the far reaches of your interests. These are just some of the reasons U.S. News & World Report named us as one of the top six Northern Baccalaureate Colleges."
Ithaca College
Ithaca College is located about 45 minutes from the central Southern Tier. "At Ithaca College you will find the perfect blend of liberal arts education and professional preparation. Our challenging academic programs promote critical thinking and hands-on learning, and our students work closely with experienced and accomplished faculty. Located in one of America's top college towns, Ithaca College boasts a lively and sophisticated residential community that takes full advantage of its stunning backdrop--blue lake, waterfalls, and gorges--and a local community rich in culture and resources."
Keuka College
Keuka College is located about an hour from the central Southern Tier. "Keuka College is a diverse, student-centered, liberal arts based learning community for those with a range of educational goals, including undergraduate degrees, professional training, and advanced study. Our emphasis on experiential education provides a cornerstone for academic study, career preparation, and personal growth. Through an intellectually challenging and supportive living and learning environment, we seek to foster our students' academic and personal development, providing them with a foundation for a lifetime of learning, service, and leadership."
